Do i NEED a mod chip to play backup games on a wii?

okay, I am running 4.3U and I have homebrew. i have tried many many ways to get a burnt disk to work, Gecko OS, just told me no dvd was in the drive. A newer version of Gecko OS, same problem. I have tried using ios236 installer v5, but that freezes at "Getting ios36 revision 3351" i have also tried cIOS intaller, i installed that with no problem, (i tried looking at it again just now to tell the steps i took, but it wont get past the disclaimer now... =/ ) but it didnt seem to do anything, I still get that the disk is unreadable. My only conclusion is that i need to get a chip or something. Or there is something EXTREMELY simple that I am overlooking. Its probably that, but if you could help, please please please and thank you!
