Is it true that when flying you dont get a free checked bag any more?

We are going to virgina on the 31st and I heard that you are not allowed a free check in bag anymore does anyone know if that is true? I am pretty sure we are flying American Airlines. oh and we are flying at frequent-fliers I dont know if that makes a diffrence.
