Why are people using semicolons in place of apostrophes?

Online, I'm noticing a lot of people using semicolons in place of apostrophes (such as "it;s", "you;re", etc...). Why are people doing this? Are people all of a sudden too lazy to move their pinkie finger one more key to the right for the apostrophe key?
